Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information from Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center
Chances are you have a lot of questions about COVID-19 and how it relates to our center. This page is designed to provide timely updates for families and the community we serve. Below you will find educational information on the great lengths our center has taken to prevent and control the spread of the virus and what you can do to help.
Restricted Visitation effective March 13th, 2020 and ongoing.
To Our Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center Family:
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued new guidance for visiting long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidance includes specific rules and additional safety measures designed to ensure the well-being of our patients and staff. We have worked diligently to implement these guidelines, but they may change frequently as they are based on the COVID-19 positivity rate in our local city or county and the status of our center as it relates to COVID-19.
In-person visits have always been a key component in the health and well-being of our patients. We place tremendous value on our patients being able to connect with their loved ones face-to-face. We have been eager to welcome our patients’ beloved family and friends back into our building. As contemplated by the guidelines, our first responsibility is to ensure the health and safety of our those in our care.
Our approach to visitation is disciplined and well-planned. We are strictly following the CMS reopening guidance, while we also continue to adhere to direction provided by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our state and local health departments.
When our city or county prevalence rate is less than 10% and when our center has no cases of COVID-19, visitation will be allowed. Please call our center to determine if these criteria are currently satisfied. Outdoor visitation is strongly preferred, however indoor visitation can be facilitated, when necessary. Visitors must complete a screening questionnaire and temperature check with each visit and may be required to present a negative test result. Those who have a temperature of 99.5 degrees or higher or who are displaying any signs or symptoms that may be related to COVID-19 will not be allowed to visit. Those who have had a recent positive test result will not be permitted to visit until they are symptom free, have had no fever for 24 hours and at least ten days have passed from symptom onset. In order to maintain six feet social distancing, only two visitors are allowed per visit. Both patients and visitors are required to wear a face covering, and visits must be scheduled, by appointment only, between the hours of 10:00am and 6:00pm.

As previously stated, per CMS requirements, when the local prevalence rate or our center’s status changes, our ability to allow visitation will change as well. Please call our center with any questions or to determine our current visitation status. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Ongoing Daily Operations: Our Dedication to a Complete Recovery
Our nursing staff provides comprehensive care in a complete recovery environment, 24-hours-a-day. This includes actively and continuously monitoring patients for any change that indicates a need for testing or additional treatment. We have, at the request of the local departments of Health, engaged in a proactive and comprehensive testing program. We are committed to notifying families whenever we receive information regarding test results.
We are also focused on making sure residents are able to participate in life-enriching opportunities because we know they contribute to good health outcomes as well. At a time when personal relationships are crucial, we have gone above and beyond to engage on a social and emotional level, along with simply “checking in” to make sure our residents feel supported.
The following actions are being taken by the center to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19:
- Ongoing education on COVID-19 symptoms, infection control practice, social distancing and proper hand washing
- Travel history and potential COVID-19 exposure screening for all employees and other essential health care personnel entering the Center
- Employee temperature and symptom monitoring prior to each shift
- Visitation restriction
- Coordination of all deliveries to one entrance, facilitated by staff members
- Discontinuation of communal dining, congregate therapy and group activities
- At a minimum of every eight hours we are monitoring resident temperatures and symptoms including respiratory status
- Further testing will be completed in accordance with the guidance of the local health department

The results above reflect patients or staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19. Testing positive for the virus does not necessarily mean that a patient or staff member is displaying symptoms; in fact, many remain asymptomatic. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of this information, but, as this fluid situation evolves, the information that is readily available evolves as well. For example, as patients recover and are discharged home, the current number will be reduced. The numbers reflected in the Cumulative Total column include the current cases along with those who have recovered and/or are no longer in our center.
Positive test results will immediately be shared personally with patients and families and also with public health officials as we partner closely together to address this novel virus.
Ongoing Daily Operations: Sophisticated Sanitizing and Disinfecting System
Our center has invested in a unique and highly effective method of disinfecting the environment through the use of an Electrostatic Spraying System. This system, in tandem with an approved disinfectant, is effective against viruses and bacteria that may typically be found in shared living areas, including respiratory illnesses. Our experience is that this technology, along with chemical anti-viral agents, have been effective in mitigating the risks of inadvertent transmission of this virus and allows for widespread sanitizing and disinfecting within the center environment. We utilize this system routinely and more frequently as needed.
Our disinfecting protocols are based on these schedules:
- The entire center is sprayed at least once a month.
- All common areas are sprayed at least once a week.
- Patient rooms are sprayed before every admission, when any isolation precaution occurs and for deep cleaning. All patients’ rooms are sprayed no less than once per month if no new admission or isolation precautions.
- If there are confirmed COVID-19 cases, the center increases its spraying process to at least 3 times per week in all patient and common areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I talk to my loved one?
We know how important it is to remain in contact with your friends and family members during this time. We are encouraging the use of online communication products like FaceTime and Skype for virtual visitation. Family members can call our center to schedule a video chat appointment today and we encourage you to do so.
What about the case of an emergency or hospice visit?
There will be circumstances when an in-person visit is necessary. If circumstances arise where one of these visits are necessary, we will facilitate a complete screening to appropriately ensure continued safety. Please contact us should you need emergency consideration.
What if I want to bring food to a resident?
When food is delivered to our center, we are asking that the food is delivered to the side entrance to our center. We will accept the food, deliver it to the resident and ensure proper hand washing is completed.
How can I take care of laundry for my loved one?
We are happy to work with families that are unable to continue providing laundry support for their loved ones. If you are able to continue to do so, we will meet you at our front entrance and gladly deliver clean garments to your loved one.
