Betty Torrence's Recovery Story

LifeWorks Rehab helped Betty get back home to her friends and family – 453 of them stopped in to visit while she was here.

I started working at Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center as a volunteer in 1993, so when it came time for me to choose where to recover after knee replacement surgery, I knew exactly where I wanted to go - there was not even a moment’s hesitation. I knew the nurses, therapists, and staff at Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center intimately, and I’d seen the kind of care they give firsthand. Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center is an important part of our local community, and I knew I’d be in great hands there.

After my surgery, I was at Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center for six weeks. My LifeWorks Rehab therapists were very friendly and absolutely wonderful in every way – they had such a great attitude. Even when I felt like I was doing just horribly, they wouldn't let me dwell on that for a second. They kept me positive and really kept my spirits up. They were so encouraging. I also had a large number of visitors, and the staff went out of their way to make them a part of my recovery. I had 17 visitors on my first day alone! Everyone signed in a book that I kept, and at the end of my stay I’d had 453 visitors.

One of the things that really stands out about my experience at Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center is that the LifeWorks Rehab therapists really take extra special care to make sure you’re ready to be at home when you get there. For someone like me who lives alone, that’s incredibly important. When I got back home, I was 100% ready to return to my daily life - I could do everything I needed to do on my own.

"I'm 100% back to my old self - I can do anything I want. I couldn't have gotten there without the care I received at Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center."
